At 12 years old, this designer, dancer, and scholar sets out to help children in homeless shelters

Meet Shaumba Subira, a 7th grader with so many interests and talents ranging from dance and designing original pieces through her own company Designs by OneHeart, to very importantly, helping girls in need.

Shaumba Subira has remarkable role models in her life most notably her mother, also named Shaumba-Yandje. She is the Artistic Director and Founder of OrigiNation, a  youth dance company with the mission to “build a nation of empowered youth leaders, one dancer at a time.” Clearly this mission has been fully embraced by her daughter.

Shaumba Subira started to learn more about kids living in homeless shelters or in the foster care system. In trying to think of what she could do to make their lives a little brighter, she started a boutique where kids can “Stop. SWAG (Slightly Worn Attire for Girls). Slay.” Girls ages 5-12 are brought in to “shop”  for clothes, accessories, gloves, mittens, scarves, purses, belts, socks, items for hair and for hygiene. Her mother supports her by giving her a space at OrigiNation for her boutique – a perfect mother-daughter collaboration.

We can support Shaumba Subira’s efforts by donating clothing items in good condition or donating gift cards. Items can be mailed to or dropped off at Origination, 3708 Washington Street, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 or mailed to:  P.O. Box 191878, Roxbury, MA  02119. You can call to make arrangements to drop off items: 617-522-3900 or email
